Why Do We Have Less Antioxidants Now Than 200 Years Ago?
A rich diet of antioxidants is vital to prevent a number of diseases, but these days our diets just don’t allow that many antioxidants to be taken in. Think about it: most of us eat processed or cooked cereal for breakfast, a cooked lunch, and a hot dinner. Some of us are healthier than others, and some eat cooked AND processed food, which can be a double whammy for killing off natural nutrients.Modern diets often substitute cereals and grains for antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables. This lowers our overall antioxidant intake considerably.
The result of modern diets is that it doesn’t look anything like that of our ancestors, and this mismatch may be causing the rise of the most common modern diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, lung cancers, obesity and pulmonary disease.
One of the benefits of ancient diets was the sheer amounts of raw fruit and vegetables that we consumed. Up to 50% of the diet consisted of fruit and vegetables, compared with only 13% today. In fact, doctors and nutritionists know that if we ate as many fruits and vegetables, our antioxidant intake would be 4.5 times higher.
So what’s the answer? We could just up our intake of fruit, right? Wrong. The modern fruits we consume contain high levels of fructose, which is a sugar. Upping our fruit intake to a sufficient level would mean we would also be taking in the same amounts of sugar as in a can of coke. In ancient times this wasn’t a problem because people were consuming WILD fruits. Wild fruits were a lot smaller, and the skin holds the antioxidants. So larger modern fruits contain more pulp inside, which carries the fructose.
