What we’re doing:
This time we’ve been training for the Grand Union Half Marathon in Uxbridge. The event was held on Sunday last, November 13th, on an unusual route which is centred around the towpath in the Uxbridge area – so at least it was nice and flat! It was on all accounts a traffic-free, scenic and multi-terrain course and there were plenty of spectator-friendly areas at the start at Cowley Recreation Ground & at the finish in Cassiobury Park, Watford. It wasn’t our fastest run ever but that seemed besides the point and the event was more focused on a day out with family and friends! We will be doing it again next year for sure – maybe with a better time in mind!

Where we’ve been:
We recently spent a short time in Fez, Morocco, at our friends guest house – the excellent Riad 9. The riad is situated within the walls of the medina, which is an ancient UNESCO protected heritage site, and unlike anyplace else we’ve ever visited. It’s the ideal place to go to spend time on the roof terrace (where the view is incredible) while reading a good book, in-between jaunts into the streets of the medina. This ancient city, which was founded in the 9th century and is home to the oldest university in the world, is well worth a visit if the opportunity ever presents itself to you – don’t pass it by!

Go see:
‘The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman’ by Grayson Parry at The British Museum

This wonderfully playful yet informative exhibition is a combination of his own works along with objects from across The British Museum collection. Perry takes the reader on a pilgrimage to his imaginary world – he says ‘When I was young I had an imaginary civilisation. Then I became an artist and my civilisation traded with the world and all its history. Now I am not sure where my imagination stops and the world starts. Deep in the mountains of my mind there is a sacred place where there is a monument to skill……The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman could be another name for The British Museum’.

At the centre of Graysons pilgrimage of his imagination is his 50 year old teddy, Alan Measles. Alan takes on various guises from Warrior to Worshipped God. Through this guise Perry illustrates his wild and vivid imagination using a broad range of mediums from ceramics, cast iron and tapestry.

It’s a must go in our opinion – on until 19th February 2012.

In the diary:
Gerhard Richter at The Tate Modern.

Throughout his life, Richter has resisted painting in any one particular style and rather has become a master of both abstraction and photorealism. Although it’s booked and in our diary to visit before Christmas, we’ve looked to journalist Alastair Sooke who has written a well rounded review of the show and of what it is that makes Richter so special; “To get a sense of what I mean, head straight for the sixth room of the exhibition at the Tate. On one wall hangs a famous portrait of Richter’s daughter, Betty. A tiny wooden panel, measuring 30cm by 40cm, covered with smooth oils, it is a bejewelled thing that renders Betty with heartfelt clarity. On the adjoining wall is Yellow-Green, painted just five years later, in 1982. More than two and a half metres high, and four metres wide, it is a monster of an abstract painting, throbbing with enormous strokes of lime-green and lemon-yellow.

It is hard to believe that one man painted both images, which occupy opposite ends of the spectrum. And yet they are equally persuasive.”

Subtitled ‘Panorama’, the Tates exhibition presents an admirably comprehensive overview of five decades of Richter’s work, from the deliberately blurry Sixties paintings based on photographs, to the series of beautiful later abstract paintings that were created with the help of all things, a squeegee.

Listen:
To Jazz off all sorts at the Cork Jazz Festival – an annual music festival held in Cork City, Ireland in late October every year. It wasn’t our first visit to Cork nor our first time to The Jazz Festival which has always proven brilliant ‘craic’. This year we especially enjoyed the broad and lively line-up at the Metropole Hotel on Saturday evening, 29th October last, featuring The Jive Ace, The Committed, Ric Yarborough Quartet, Bruce Barth Trio, The Booty Band and Beat ‘N’ Blow to mention but a few.

Eat:
Fresh Borough Market produce at Elliots of Stoney Street. It is the second outlet for the team from The Pavilion Cafe in Victoria Park, East London, and since opening it’s doors a couple of months ago it has been really well received by both critics and customers alike. We loved the communal tables and baudy atmosphere and we tucked into dishes assembled from that days market produce such as tender English squid with romesco sauce, goats curd & mixed beet salad, mussels with cider & fennel and patridge with corn, leeks & bacon. Delicious!

It’s a while since we last visited, and we can’t wait to go again before the new year, to see what they’re mustering up with the ingredients during this festive season.
